Ducklings, Pigeons, Hunting Grey Heron and Crow Family Behavior in an Urban River

An Eastern Spot-billed Duck family resting at a pigeon drinking site, a Grey Heron repeatedly capturing fish, an apparent parent–juvenile interaction between Carrion Crows, and a separated duckling calling for its family were among the notable scenes recorded during this summer urban wildlife observation.

Filmed beside an urban river in Japan, this long-form field record documents the everyday behavior of waterbirds and other animals living in a human-modified riparian ecosystem. The footage includes waterfowl brood behavior, duckling foraging, temporary brood separation, parent–offspring communication, interspecific interactions, avian predation, fish capture, and the use of shallow-water microhabitats.

The observations were filmed with Nikon P1100 and Nikon P950 superzoom cameras. With the exception of the opening three-minute highlights, the video is presented with minimal editing and without background music so that the animals’ movements, calls, pauses, and surrounding natural sounds can be examined in their original context.


Wildlife Species Featured

カルガモ — Eastern Spot-billed Duck

Anas zonorhyncha

The Eastern Spot-billed Duck is a dabbling duck native to East and Southeast Asia. It commonly inhabits rivers, ponds, wetlands, irrigation channels, and other shallow freshwater environments.

Females raise their broods without assistance from the male. Young ducklings remain highly mobile from an early age and feed on aquatic invertebrates, insects, seeds, plant material, and other small food items found near the water’s surface or along the riverbank.

Several individually identified Eastern Spot-billed Duck families appear in this record. Their family codes are based on the mother’s plumage pattern, the number of ducklings, and the estimated age of the brood.


イソシギ — Common Sandpiper

Actitis hypoleucos

The Common Sandpiper is a small migratory shorebird frequently observed along rivers, lakes, reservoirs, canals, and muddy shorelines.

It typically forages close to the water’s edge, picking small aquatic invertebrates, insects, crustaceans, and other prey from exposed stones, mud, and shallow water. Its low flight and characteristic tail-bobbing behavior often make it recognizable even at a distance.

Two individuals were briefly observed during this recording. Their appearance was noteworthy because this species becomes difficult to find locally during part of the summer.


ハシボソガラス — Carrion Crow

Corvus corone

The Carrion Crow is an intelligent and adaptable corvid found in farmland, river corridors, parks, residential districts, and other open or semi-open environments.

Carrion Crows are omnivorous and may investigate stones, soil, discarded objects, insects, seeds, carrion, and human-derived food. Juveniles often remain near their parents after fledging while learning how to locate and handle food.

Two crows in this video appeared to be a parent and a juvenile. One individual moved small stones, after which the presumed adult suddenly jumped onto or over the younger bird. The reason for this interaction could not be determined from the footage alone. It may have involved discipline, displacement, play, food competition, or another form of social behavior, but no definitive interpretation is made here.


アオサギ — Grey Heron

Ardea cinerea

The Grey Heron is a large wading bird associated with rivers, lakes, marshes, estuaries, reservoirs, and urban waterways.

It is an opportunistic predator that commonly feeds on fish but may also capture amphibians, crustaceans, reptiles, insects, small mammals, and occasionally birds. Its hunting technique often involves standing motionless or walking slowly through shallow water before striking rapidly with its bill.

This recording contains several relatively complete predation sequences, including arrival, landing, stalking, prey detection, striking, and swallowing. Such uninterrupted sequences are especially valuable for studying prey-searching behavior and strike timing.


カワセミ — Common Kingfisher

Alcedo atthis

The Common Kingfisher is a small, brightly colored fish-eating bird found near rivers, ponds, lakes, canals, and other freshwater habitats.

It usually hunts from a perch, watching the water before diving after small fish or aquatic invertebrates. Water depth, turbidity, surface reflections, available perches, and prey visibility can all influence whether a hunting attempt is made.

A kingfisher briefly appeared while the water level was unusually low. It did not perform a visible plunge-dive during the recorded sequence.


カワラバト — Feral Pigeon / Rock Dove

Columba livia

The Feral Pigeon is the free-living urban form descended from domesticated Rock Doves. It is widely associated with buildings, bridges, stations, parks, riverbanks, and other human-modified environments.

Feral Pigeons regularly visit shallow river margins and artificial drainage structures to drink and bathe. Unlike many birds, pigeons can drink by immersing the bill and drawing water continuously rather than repeatedly raising the head after each sip.

In this observation, a group of ducklings occupied a small drinking site frequently used by pigeons. The resulting encounter was not strongly aggressive, but the pigeons repeatedly approached and hesitated while the resting ducklings remained in place.


コイ — Common Carp / Koi

Cyprinus carpio

The Common Carp is a large freshwater fish found in ponds, lakes, reservoirs, canals, and slow-moving rivers. Koi are domesticated ornamental varieties of the same species.

Large carp often swim close to waterfowl and may disturb the water around feeding or resting birds. The adult Eastern Spot-billed Duck seen here showed little obvious alarm toward the nearby carp.


トンボ類 — Dragonflies

Order Odonata

Dragonflies are aerial predatory insects whose aquatic larvae develop in freshwater habitats. Adults frequently patrol rivers, ponds, wetlands, and open spaces in search of smaller flying insects.

The Grey Heron appeared at one point to be watching activity near a dragonfly, although the intended target could not be confirmed. Grey Herons are capable of catching large insects, but no dragonfly capture was documented in this sequence.


小魚類 — Small Freshwater Fish

Various species

Several small fish were captured by the Grey Heron. The image quality and brief handling time did not allow reliable species-level identification.

These fish were concentrated in shallow water after the flow near a small sluice appeared to have temporarily slowed or stopped. Such changes in water level and current can alter prey accessibility and create short-lived feeding opportunities for piscivorous birds.

03:01 — Eastern Spot-billed Duck Family スf3-10 Found with One Duckling Missing

An Eastern Spot-billed Duck family identified as スf3-10 was found shortly after filming began.

The code indicates the individually recognized mother スf, three ducklings currently present, and an estimated brood age of ten days. This family had previously been observed with four ducklings, meaning that one young bird was no longer accompanying the group.

No cause for the disappearance was observed. Possible explanations can include temporary separation, predation, injury, or mortality, but the footage provides no direct evidence supporting any particular cause.


03:09 — Ducklings Jump While Catching Small Prey

The young ducklings actively foraged near the water’s edge. Their short jumps appeared to be attempts to catch small insects or other mobile prey.

Such rapid movements show how young dabbling ducks combine surface pecking, visual tracking, and short lunges while feeding in shallow riparian habitats.


03:30 — Adult Female Tears and Eats a Leaf

The mother duck was recorded pulling at a leaf and tearing off plant material.

Slow-motion review confirmed that she swallowed part of the vegetation. Eastern Spot-billed Ducks are omnivorous and may consume both animal prey and plant matter, including leaves, seeds, shoots, and aquatic vegetation.

The sequence is useful as a close behavioral record of folivory and bill-assisted plant handling in a free-ranging duck.


04:52 — Ducklings Move Ahead While the Mother Remains Behind

The three ducklings became absorbed in foraging and continued forward without waiting for the mother.

The adult stayed behind temporarily before the group later reunited. The missing fourth duckling did not appear during the waiting period.


06:21 — Ducklings Return to the Mother

The young birds returned to the adult female, restoring close contact between the visible members of the family.

This illustrates how brood cohesion can temporarily loosen during feeding before being re-established through movement, visual contact, and vocal communication.


07:52 — Two Common Sandpipers Appear

Two Common Sandpipers were briefly observed along the river.

Their return was notable because they had become difficult to locate during the summer period. Further searching later in the observation did not produce another sighting.

Even a short record can contribute useful information about local seasonal occurrence and movement along an urban river corridor.


08:12 — Probable Carrion Crow Parent and Juvenile

Two Carrion Crows were observed together and appeared, based on their behavior and proximity, to be an adult and a juvenile.

They investigated the ground and handled small objects, including stones. Recently fledged crows often remain with their parents while developing foraging and object-manipulation skills.

The age and relationship of the birds were not independently confirmed, so the parent–juvenile interpretation remains provisional.


08:35 — Crow Moves a Small Stone

One crow deliberately displaced a small stone while investigating the ground.

Corvids frequently manipulate objects when searching for concealed prey or edible material. However, the precise purpose of this action was not visible.


08:55 — Presumed Adult Crow Jumps onto the Younger Bird

The presumed adult suddenly jumped onto or over the apparent juvenile.

Repeated review did not reveal a clear trigger. The action may have been related to social correction, food competition, displacement, play, or another interaction within the family group.

Because a similar conflict-like interaction between probable crow family members had been observed previously, an educational or disciplinary function is conceivable. Nevertheless, assigning human concepts such as punishment or teaching would be speculative without additional behavioral context.


09:19 — Duck Family オf2-31 Reappears

A duck family provisionally identified as オf2-31 was found again after an absence of approximately one week. The mother and two young birds quickly entered vegetation.

The identification was not completely secure. Based on the expected age of 31 days, the juveniles appeared smaller and less developed than anticipated.

An alternative possibility is that this was the similar-looking family ケf2, whose ducklings would have been approximately 26 days old. That age appeared more consistent with their visible feather development.


Identification Uncertainty: オf2 or ケf2

Closer examination reopened the possibility that the families labeled オf and ケf might represent the same mother recorded under two separate identities.

The mothers have similar head markings and are often seen in the same area, but previous comparisons suggested differences in the tertial feather patterns and the apparent size of their ducklings. Earlier observations involving another family also appeared to support treating them as separate broods.

The evidence remains contradictory. For continuity, the family is recorded here as オf2-31 because that was the family most recently documented in this location. The uncertainty has been retained in the observation database for future comparison.

This is an important example of the limitations of visual identification in long-term field studies of unmarked animals. Plumage angle, lighting, molt, posture, image resolution, and growth-rate variation can all complicate individual recognition.


10:11 — Grey Heron Arrives and Immediately Begins Hunting

A Grey Heron flew into the site, landed in shallow water, and began searching for prey.

The recording captured the transition from flight and landing to active predatory behavior, providing more context than a strike-only clip.


11:22 — Grey Heron Captures Another Fish

The heron successfully captured a second fish.

A nearby small sluice appeared to be closed, temporarily reducing the flow of water. The resulting shallow or slow-moving conditions may have increased fish visibility or restricted the prey’s escape routes.

This interpretation is plausible but cannot be confirmed without direct measurements of water flow and prey density.


12:22 — Slow Stalking and an Unsuccessful Strike

The Grey Heron walked carefully toward a small cavity or depression and watched it for an extended period.

It eventually struck with its bill but did not visibly capture prey. This failed attempt is valuable because it records the complete predatory sequence rather than only successful feeding events.

Unsuccessful strikes help show the energetic costs and uncertainty involved in natural foraging.


15:46 — Possible Attention Toward a Dragonfly

The heron appeared to track activity near a dragonfly but did not strike.

Grey Herons sometimes capture large insects, including dragonflies. In this instance, however, it may instead have been watching a fish or another aquatic animal beneath the insect.

The target remains unidentified.


16:27 — Careful Approach Followed by Fish Capture

The heron detected another fish and approached slowly before making a successful strike.

The sequence clearly shows prey detection, cautious positioning, neck extension, bill strike, prey retrieval, and swallowing.

Capturing several hunting attempts from their earliest stages is unusual because observers often notice the action only after the bird has already begun its strike.


18:37 — Another Small Fish Captured

The Grey Heron caught another small fish.

The repeated captures suggest that the temporarily altered shallow-water conditions provided a productive feeding opportunity.


20:09 — Common Kingfisher Appears at the Low-Water Site

A Common Kingfisher briefly visited the same area.

The water may have been too shallow or otherwise unsuitable for a normal plunge-dive. No diving attempt was recorded, and the bird soon left the visible area.

This provides a useful contrast between the wading hunting strategy of the Grey Heron and the aerial plunge-diving strategy normally used by the kingfisher.


20:27 — Second Encounter with the オf2 Family

The two-duckling family was encountered again and filmed for a longer period to preserve additional identification evidence.

Longer sequences are particularly useful when comparing body size, feather development, head markings, tertial patterns, and mother–duckling associations.


21:48 — Juvenile Plumage Appears Young for 31 Days

The shoulder and wing feathers of the juveniles were beginning to darken and develop a more structured appearance.

Their plumage seemed consistent with an age of approximately 25–30 days, making the estimated age of 26 days for ケf2 appear plausible. Even so, feather development varies among individuals and can be affected by viewing conditions, so age cannot be determined precisely from this sequence alone.


22:43 — Three Ducklings Left at a Pigeon Drinking Site

The スf3 family appeared again, but the mother was temporarily absent.

The three approximately ten-day-old ducklings remained at a shallow site commonly used by Feral Pigeons for drinking. A similar temporary separation had occurred with this family on the previous day.

The ducklings’ presence created a prolonged interspecific encounter because the pigeons repeatedly approached the water but hesitated to move past the resting brood.


24:50 — Separated Ducklings Sleep While Waiting

The three ducklings rested together and eventually slept.

Remaining close to siblings can provide social contact and may reduce exposure compared with separating individually. Nevertheless, young ducklings without the immediate protection of the mother are potentially vulnerable to predators, disturbance, and accidental separation.

The footage does not establish why the mother left or whether she remained nearby but out of view.


25:21 — Mother Returns

The mother duck returned to the resting site.

The ducklings woke but showed relatively little immediate excitement. Their subdued response may indicate that they had remained aware of her location, that the separation was routine, or simply that they were still resting.

Behavioral motivation cannot be determined with certainty from the visible reaction alone.


28:17 — Pigeons Continue Approaching the Occupied Water Source

Feral Pigeons intermittently attempted to reach the water, but the three ducklings continued to occupy the most convenient drinking position.

The interaction illustrates how small, highly localized resources can be shared or contested by different urban bird species without escalating into direct aggression.


30:22 — Pigeon Startles One Duckling

A pigeon approached closely enough to startle one of the ducklings, which moved away briefly.

Despite this reaction, the brood did not completely vacate the drinking site, leaving the pigeons unable to access the water comfortably.


30:50 — Another Duckling Wakes and Begins Moving

A second duckling became active and began to leave the resting position.

The young birds appeared to wait for the mother and the rest of the family before fully departing.


33:27 — Pigeons Finally Drink

Once the ducklings moved away, the Feral Pigeons gained access to the shallow water and drank.

A similar resource-blocking situation had previously been observed at the same location when a turtle occupied the drinking area.

These repeated encounters show how a very small piece of river infrastructure can function as a shared microhabitat for birds, reptiles, fish, and other urban wildlife.


34:51 — スf Mother Frequently Displaces Other Ducks

The スf mother has often been observed chasing or displacing other ducks.

Such behavior may help maintain space around the brood, reduce close contact with unfamiliar adults, or secure access to preferred feeding and resting areas.

Aggression among adult ducks can vary considerably between individuals and situations.


36:29 — Little Visible Alarm Toward Carp

The mother showed limited concern toward nearby carp.

Large fish can occasionally cause sudden underwater disturbance, but the duck’s response depends on the fish species, size, movement, proximity, and the mother’s previous experience.

The loss of the fourth duckling was therefore not visibly linked to a fish attack during this observation. No catfish predation was witnessed.


37:58 — シf6-19 Family Found at a Frequent Separation Site

Another Eastern Spot-billed Duck family, シf6-19, was found with six approximately 19-day-old ducklings.

The location has repeatedly produced temporary brood separations. Dense vegetation, uneven banks, divided channels, limited visibility, and multiple feeding routes may make it difficult for young ducklings to maintain contact with the mother.

The family appeared to be foraging rather than simply passing through, increasing the opportunity for individual ducklings to become separated.


38:28 — シf Mother Chases Another Duck

The mother displaced another duck from the area.

This may have been brood-defense behavior or competition over space and feeding access.


39:45 — Separated Duckling Calls from an Unknown Position

A duckling could be heard calling, but its exact position was initially unclear.

The mother waited and also vocalized, indicating that acoustic contact had been maintained even though visual contact was obstructed.

The position was concerning because previous brood losses and separations have occurred in this part of the river.


40:32 — Mother and Duckling Continue Calling

Both the adult and the separated young bird continued to vocalize.

Their calls helped maintain contact, but the family did not immediately reunite. This prolonged exchange demonstrates the importance of vocal communication when vegetation and river structures interrupt line of sight.


44:09 — Five Ducklings Confirmed, One Still Calling Elsewhere

Five ducklings were visible with or near the mother, while the sixth continued calling from another location.

At this stage, the brood remained divided into a group of five and one isolated individual.


44:40 — Mother Locates the Missing Duckling and Flies Upstream

The mother suddenly flew a short distance upstream after apparently locating the separated duckling.

Her movement revealed that the missing bird had remained farther upstream than the rest of the brood.

This was the decisive moment in the family’s reunion process.


45:53 — All Six Ducklings Reunited

The other five ducklings eventually climbed upstream and rejoined the mother and the previously separated sibling.

All six young birds were confirmed together.

Although the outcome was successful, the lengthy separation shows how quickly a brood can become divided while feeding in structurally complex urban waterways.


48:39 — Family Passes a Familiar Resting Site

The シf6 family passed a location previously used as a favored resting place but did not stop.

Resting-site choice can change according to disturbance, sunlight, temperature, water level, vegetation, feeding activity, and the position of other animals.


49:24 — Two Probable Tf Juveniles Seen Around the Channel

Two birds believed to be young individuals associated with Tf were observed on opposite levels of the channel.

The observer hoped to record them flying upward between the levels, but no ascent was witnessed.

The footage nevertheless documents their continued presence and use of the artificial waterway structure.


Field Summary

Despite the high temperature and the difficulty of remembering every event before reviewing the footage, the recording contained several valuable behavioral sequences.

The repeated Grey Heron fish captures were especially useful because the footage preserved not only the successful strikes but also the bird’s arrival, stalking movements, prey assessment, unsuccessful attempt, and cautious repositioning.

The Carrion Crow interaction was visually striking but remains behaviorally ambiguous. It should not be described definitively as discipline, aggression, play, or training without further evidence.

The prolonged encounter between the sleeping ducklings and the thirsty Feral Pigeons documented low-intensity competition for a tiny drinking site. It also demonstrated how artificial river structures can become important shared resources within an urban ecosystem.

The シf6 family successfully reunited after one duckling became separated upstream. In contrast, the スf family was already missing one member of its earlier brood. Because no loss event was observed, the fate of the fourth duckling remains unknown.

Continued observation on the following day was considered important because a temporarily separated duckling might still have been present somewhere in the area.


Individual Identification of Duck Families

A large number of Eastern Spot-billed Duck families inhabit or move through this river system. To distinguish them, mothers are identified primarily through the patterns of their tertial feathers and other visible plumage characteristics.

Each family is assigned a code combining:

  • the individual mother’s identification symbol,

  • the observation year,

  • the number of ducklings currently present,

  • and the estimated age of the ducklings in days.

These codes allow sightings from different dates to be compared and help preserve uncertainty when identification is incomplete.

Purpose of This Unedited Wildlife Record

On YouTube, I mainly introduce Eastern Spot-billed Duck families and other memorable scenes from urban wildlife through short-form videos.

Those short videos often use background music, sound effects, selected camera angles, slow motion, captions, and other editing techniques. Although editing can make animal behavior easier to understand and help more people become interested in wildlife, it can also make it difficult to judge what actually happened in real time.

I personally tend to question highly edited wildlife footage when the original context is unavailable.

Every short video published on my channel is therefore based on longer recordings like this one: patient, continuous observations of wild animals behaving naturally. The unedited or minimally edited footage serves as the underlying evidence for the scenes later presented in short-form videos.

These recordings also preserve events that may seem unremarkable when viewed individually: a family feeding, a duckling becoming temporarily separated, a bird waiting without moving, changes in water level, seasonal arrivals, unsuccessful hunting attempts, or the gradual development of juvenile plumage.

However, when more than 1,000 days of date-based observations are viewed as a continuous archive, these ordinary moments can become important records of seasonal change, individual behavior, brood survival, habitat use, species interactions, and the changing ecology of an urban river.

I understand that these long videos can be inconvenient to watch. They contain quiet periods, repeated behavior, imperfect camera movement, obstructed views, and many scenes in which nothing dramatic occurs.

Nevertheless, I believe that these limitations are also part of an honest field record.

I hope this archive will be useful to birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts, researchers, educators, video creators, and anyone who shares an interest in the lives of animals living alongside people.
