Summer Surprises on the River: Mother Duck Falls on Her Duckling! Wagtail vs Snake, and New Life Emerging
Today's outing was full of surprises, drama, and tender moments along the summer riverbank.
We began searching for yesterday’s newly arrived Of8 family, hoping to confirm they had settled safely. Despite checking every likely spot, they were nowhere to be seen—a bit worrying. But instead, we discovered a brand-new brood:
Meet the “Kf1” Family—just one tiny duckling about 10 days old. Finding two new families on back-to-back days is remarkable, but also suggests many ducklings hide in the heat, making them harder to spot.
Nearby was Mf1, another single-duckling family, whose older chick (42 days) even chased other ducks away confidently. Yet when Mf1 entered dense brush, out popped Yf3, a shy family rarely seen except darting down narrow channels.
🐥 Unexpected Drama: Mother Duck’s Slip!
We eventually tracked down Of7, yesterday’s Of8 family—now with one duckling fewer. This time we found them near a small water gate, an area rarely used by duck families.
While climbing a step, the mother duck slipped and fell right onto her duckling! Luckily, everyone seemed okay, but it was a nail-biting moment to witness.
Afterward, they explored carefully. The lone duckling stayed unusually close to its mother, creating a sweet, if slightly tense, scene. They eventually vanished into thick brush, where we lost sight despite a two-hour watch.
🐍 Wagtail vs Snake!
While waiting, I filmed a white wagtail under the bridge—and suddenly realized there was a large Japanese rat snake (Aodaisho) in the frame!
The wagtail was incredibly curious, approaching the snake repeatedly before finally flying away. An unplanned but fascinating encounter.
🐦 Sparrows Hunting in Flight
On top of everything else, I also captured sparrows hovering to catch spiders, much like the wagtail did yesterday. Their precision and speed are always amazing to watch.
🌿 Other River Life
The older families like Of2 (38 days) were well established in the nursery area, while mixed groups of adult ducks gathered to prepare for molt, complicating ID work.
There was even a special moment when Tf8 shared a scene with a kingfisher, reminding us how many creatures share this rich ecosystem.
❤️ Reflections
Seeing Kf1—a brand-new life—reminded me that even in the height of summer, the river’s cycle of birth and growth continues. Meanwhile, Of7’s reduced brood and the mother's slip highlight the daily risks these families face.
It’s always a privilege to watch these moments of life and survival, even when they come with surprises and tension.

夏の川辺でのサプライズ：母カモがヒナに落下！？ハクセキレイVSヘビ、新しい命の発見

今日は真夏の川辺で、驚きとドラマ、そして癒やしの瞬間をたっぷり味わうことができました。
まずは、昨日引っ越してきたばかりのオf8親子の安否確認からスタート。しかし、予想していた場所を何度も探しても姿は見えず…。少し不安になりつつも、代わりに新たな親子を発見しました。
新登場「カf1」親子は、推定生後10日ほどのヒナが1羽。2日連続で新しい家族を見つけられたのは嬉しい驚きですが、同時に、猛暑で草むらに隠れて見つけにくくなっているのかもしれません。
近くにはMf1もいて、こちらもヒナは1羽（42日目）。Mf子カモは近づく他のカモを追い払うほどの頼もしさを見せました。しかし、茂みに入ったMf1を追うと、なんとそこから普段は滅多に見られないYf3が飛び出してきました。支流を一直線に進むその姿から、普段はこの茂みに隠れているという説を裏付けるようでした。
🐥 母カモ、まさかの落下ハプニング！
ようやく見つけたのは、昨日8羽だったオf組。今日はなんと1羽減ってオf7に…。今年初めて小水門の下で遭遇しました。
母カモが段差を登ろうとしたその時、足を滑らせてヒナの上に落下するというハプニングが発生！幸いヒナは無事そうでしたが、見ていてヒヤリとしました。
その後は慎重な散歩モード。ヒナが母にピッタリと寄り添い続ける姿がとても可愛らしかったです。最終的には茂みの中へ消えてしまい、2時間ほど粘って探しましたが、再び姿を捉えることはできませんでした。
🐍 ハクセキレイVSヘビの意外な遭遇
オf7を探している最中、橋の下で撮っていたハクセキレイの映像に、なんと大きなアオダイショウが映り込みました！
ハクセキレイはヘビに興味津々で、しばらく近づいたり離れたりを繰り返してから飛び去っていきました。まさかの遭遇に驚きと興奮を覚えました。
🐦 スズメのホバリング狩り
さらに、スズメがホバリングして蜘蛛を狙う狩りの瞬間も撮影できました。昨日のハクセキレイに続き、スズメの素早く正確な動きにも感心しました。
🌿 川辺の他の命たち
子育てエリアでは、**Of2（38日目）**がすっかり馴染んだ様子で過ごしていました。
また、大人のカモたちが大換羽を控えて集団で集まっており、その羽の模様の違いを観察するのも楽しかったです。ただ、成長した子ガモたちが混じると識別は一層難しく…。
Tf8とカワセミが同じフレームに収まる、美しいコラボシーンも見ることができました。
❤️ 観察者の想い
真夏の厳しい暑さの中でも、カf1という新たな命に出会えたことは大きな喜びでした。母カモが足を滑らせてヒナに落ちたハプニング、ヘビに興味津々なハクセキレイ、スズメのホバリング狩りと、驚きの連続の一日。
自然の中には、思わぬ出会いやドラマがあふれていて、改めてその多様さに感動しました。
