New Summer Hatchlings on the Move! Brave Ducklings Cross Blockades and Gates in Their First Big Adventure
Today’s adventure was something truly special—a brand new duck family, hatched in the heat of summer, making their daring first move!
Meet the “Of8” family, our 31st observed brood this year. Just three days old, these tiny ducklings showed both courage and chaos as they tackled the river’s toughest obstacles to reach a safer area to grow.
The Great Migration Begins:
The mother led her eight ducklings downriver, plunging into the current with surprising speed. At one point, the little ones charged at another duck—were they confused or just feisty? Their determination was undeniable.
Surviving the Block Zone and Gate:
They faced the notorious “block zone,” a maze of concrete barriers that can trap and exhaust ducklings. But this determined crew didn’t stop. At the water gate, the mother seemed to consider climbing a wall before finally guiding her ducklings safely down. It was both nerve-wracking and triumphant.
They ended their journey drenched but safe, settling into thick vegetation—a spot used in the past by other famous families. It was like watching history repeat with new stars.
Other Families Along the Way:
We also spotted Ef6, who eyed the newcomers warily while trying to climb the dam. Xf5 and Af3 were seen napping or moving through familiar routes. In the nursery zone, older broods like Of2, Tf8, Lf4, and Cf3 were harder to distinguish—a reminder of how fast these little ones grow.
Unexpected Encounters:
The Of8 family even passed a bathing carrion crow family, and shared scenes with adorable white wagtails—whose hovering hunts for spiders added extra drama. Watching wagtails next to these tiny ducklings really highlighted just how small the new arrivals were.
❤️ Reflections
It was exhausting trying to keep up with them (over 20,000 steps walked today!), but also deeply rewarding. Seeing a brand new summer brood take on the river’s challenges is a rare treat.
Their mother’s leadership, the ducklings’ bravery, and their final arrival in the safety of the nursery area were all beautiful reminders of life’s resilience.

今日は特別な瞬間を観察することができました。真夏に誕生したばかりのカルガモ親子が、初めての大移動に挑戦する姿です。
今年31組目となる「オf8」親子は、生後わずか3日目。それなのに、ブロック地帯や水門という川の難所を突破して、安全な子育てエリアまで移動する姿は感動的でした。
引っ越し作戦スタート！
母カモが率いる8羽のヒナたちは、思い切り川へ飛び込み、一気に下流へ。途中で他のカモに突撃するような行動もあり、間違えたのか、性格が強いのか…。その必死さがとても印象的でした。
魔のブロック地帯と水門を突破
川のコンクリートブロック地帯は、ヒナたちにとっては迷路のような危険な場所。でも、母カモの誘導で全員無事に通過。水門では母が壁を登ろうと考える素振りも見せつつ、最終的には慎重に下り切りました。最後はびしょ濡れになりながらも、かつて他のカルガモ親子も利用してきた茂みの寝床に到着。歴史を感じる瞬間でした。

下流ではエf6が堰を登ろうとしつつ、オf組の出現に警戒する様子も。Xf5やアf3は昼寝をしたり移動をしたり、見慣れた光景もありました。子育てエリアではOf2やTf8、Lf4なども確認。成長したヒナたちはもう見分けが難しいほどです。
思わぬ出会いも
オf8親子が進む途中で、水浴びするハシボソガラス親子に遭遇したり、ハクセキレイがホバリングしながら蜘蛛を捕まえる様子も観察。小さなオfのヒナたちとセキレイの大きさを比べると、その小ささに改めて驚きました。

今日は20,000歩を超える大移動でしたが、それだけの価値がある日でした。真夏生まれの新しい命が、母カモに導かれて難所を越え、無事に子育てエリアに到着する姿を見届けられたのは本当に幸せです。
母のたくましさ、ヒナの勇気、そして最終的に安全な場所でお昼寝を始めた姿に、命の力強さを感じました。
