A summer day on the river delivered drama, growth, and surprising teamwork from our duck families. Today’s adventure begins with the hunt for the missing Of7 family—despite checking side streams and favorite spots, they remained elusive.
Meanwhile, Of2 (41 days old) stayed in their usual spot below the weir, showing they’re settling into familiar territory after yesterday’s struggle to climb.
If4 (40 days) and Lf4 (44 days) lounged downstream, their juveniles showing off telltale pinfeathers. Seeing both families napping nearby made for a bustling riverscape, while a small group of unidentified young ducks kept the ID game interesting.
Below the water gate, three young ducks gathered at a popular resting spot, awaiting identification another day.
In the "Dangerous Block Zone" near the watergate, I spotted Uf1 (32 days) and their adorable departure from under the bridge. Nearby, tiny blue flowers (“Veronica persica?”) added unexpected charm to the scene.
Af3 (24 days) was safe and active, while Gf7 (58 days) and Ef6 (55 days) finally reappeared! Ef6 displayed incredible water repellency, practically diving underwater without getting wet—a testament to their adaptation from their pond-born origins.
Xf5 (32 days) impressed me with their sliding skills, as ducklings confidently turned the weir into a playground. They even startled an egret (a Little Egret) with surprised peeps, despite being larger themselves—a hilarious moment of scale and surprise!
The Ef5 (18 days) family brought drama. Their number dropped by one, a sobering reminder of the harsh realities these families face. But when a suspicious duck approached, mother and ducklings executed a "double attack," driving it away in coordinated style—an amazing display of family teamwork and vigilance.
Nearby, Ff6 (54 days) showed stability; their previously separated duckling had rejoined, and mom was relaxed enough to nap even as ducklings explored.
Df5 (56 days) returned to its old haunt below the watergate. It was moving to see them back at the spot where they’d once raised 9 ducklings, now down to 5, some of whom practiced flapping—preparing for the future.
Cf3 (61 days) and Tf8 (36 days) also appeared healthy and strong. The Cf3 ducklings had clearly grown in the extra day since I last missed them.
Beyond the ducks, the day brought more wildlife moments: a kingfisher perched, preening and even regurgitating a pellet. Watching from its point of view revealed an underwater world teeming with tiny fish and shrimp.
Other memorable details included egrets, noisy treepies (magpies), and even the sound of mallards bathing. The river offered endless scenes to savor, like Cf3’s family relaxing on concrete tetrapods or Uf1 ducklings snuggling close.
Today's highlight was surely the mother and ducklings executing a perfect "double attack" to protect their space—proving once again that even in the animal world, family teamwork is a powerful force.
真夏の川辺は、カルガモ親子たちのドラマと成長が満載でした。今日の冒険は、昨日から姿を見せないオf7親子を探すところから始まりましたが、支流などを探し回っても結局見つからず…。
一方、**Of2（生後41日目）**は、昨日登れなかった堰の下の定位置に落ち着いていました。徐々に「ここが自分たちの場所」という安心感が出てきたようです。
下流では**イf4（40日目）とLf4（44日目）**が近くでお昼寝中。筆毛がしっかり出てきたヒナたちが可愛く、親子が同じエリアでくつろぐ様子が賑やかでした。近くには正体不明の若カモたちもちらほら。
水門下の人気の寝床では、3羽の若カモが集まっており、今後の識別が楽しみです。
「魔のブロック地帯」付近では、**Uf1（32日目）**親子を発見。池生まれらしい可愛らしい出発シーンを見せてくれました。近くに咲く小さな青い花（オオイヌノフグリ？）が風景を彩ります。
**アf3（24日目）**も無事確認でき、安心。さらに、**Gf7（58日目）とEf6（55日目）**の親子にも久々に出会えました。特にEf6は超撥水性を発揮し、水に潜りながらも全く濡れない様子をじっくり撮影。池育ちの適応力に感心しました。
**Xf5（32日目）**のヒナたちは、なんと自分たちから率先して堰を滑り台のように降りる姿を披露！その上達ぶりに感動。下りた先でコサギに遭遇し、驚いた声を上げつつも、子カモの方が大きいという意外な展開に微笑ましさを感じました。
一方、**エf5（18日目）**はヒナが1羽減ってしまい、探したものの見つからず残念…。ですが、怪しいカモが接近してきた際、母カモがまず突撃、続けてヒナたちも追撃するという「二段突撃」を披露し、不審者を撃退！親子の見事な連携に驚かされました。
**Ff6（54日目）**は以前はぐれていたヒナが合流し、母カモも安心してお昼寝する姿を観察。
**Df5（56日目）**は懐かしの水門下に帰還。かつて9羽いた子カモが5羽になりつつも、羽ばたきの練習をする姿が健気でした。
**Cf3（61日目）やTf8（36日目）**も元気な姿を見せてくれ、昨日見逃していたCf3の成長した姿に胸をなでおろしました。
他にも、カワセミのメスが食後のようにまったりする姿や、ペリットを吐く瞬間、水中の小魚やエビが意外なほど多い様子など、小さな発見が満載でした。
今日一番のハイライトは、やはり母カモとヒナが見せた「二段突撃」。親子の絆と知恵を感じられる、忘れられないワンシーンでした。
