Today’s river adventure was a true emotional roller coaster for our duck families.
The absolute highlight was the KiF7 family (about 3 days old)—a brand new summer brood making its debut! At first, the tiny ducklings were nestled safely under their mother. But then danger struck: a Grey Heron flew by, sending everyone scrambling for cover. When things calmed down, one duckling was missing.
What followed was almost cinematic: the mother and the other ducklings began moving downstream, seemingly giving up. But then—a faint peeping! The lost duckling, which had fallen into a hidden burrow in the riverside brush, managed to climb out and call for help. Hearing its cry, the mother reversed direction and rushed back, reuniting the family in a heartwarming scene.
Their day wasn’t over: KiF7 later attempted to scale a tricky river weir. Only two ducklings made it—so mom quickly called it quits and led them back downstream. That kind of split-second decision shows a mother’s pragmatism.
There was also a moment of “sudden independence training” when mom flew off, leaving two ducklings behind in a popular resting spot. The little ones waited quietly and napped in the shallows until she eventually returned. Watching these brief separations reminds us of how even wild parents gently teach self-reliance.

It was a day of new life, small losses, dramatic reunions, and teaching moments. Watching a mother duck never give up on a lost chick was especially moving—a reminder of how much tenacity and love is woven into even the most ordinary-looking wildlife.
今日の川辺は、カルガモ親子たちのドラマが満載の一日でした。
最大のハイライトは、今年33組目となる新しい家族、キf7（生後3日目頃）。最初は母カモの下にしっかり隠れる小さなヒナたちがとても可愛らしかったのですが、アオサギが近くを通過するというアクシデントで、一気に緊急避難モードに。落ち着いてから数を数えると、なんとヒナが1羽行方不明に。
そこからが本当に感動的でした。母カモは残ったヒナを連れて下流へ移動し始め、一度は諦めたかのように見えました。ところが、茂みの中からかすかな鳴き声が！穴に落ちて出られなくなっていたヒナが必死に鳴いていたのです。母カモはその声を聞きつけてすぐに戻り、無事に再会を果たすことができました。
その後、キf7は川を遡って堰登りにチャレンジ。2羽だけが登れたものの、母カモは無理だと判断して潔く撤退。こういう決断の速さも、野生の親子の知恵を感じます。
さらに、人気の寝床で母カモが突然ヒナを2羽だけ残して飛び去る「置き去り」も観察。幼いヒナがじっと母の帰りを待ち、浅瀬で再び寝る姿は、可愛いながらも自然界の自立を促す一幕のようでした。その後母カモは戻ってきて無事に合流し、再び下流へ移動していきました。

今日は、新たに生まれた命への喜びと、途中でヒナが減ってしまう切なさ、そして母子の再会の感動まで、本当に色々な感情が入り交じる観察になりました。カルガモ親子が見せる小さな決断や挑戦が、こんなにも深く胸に刺さるとは改めて思わされます。
