On July 24, 2025, the riverbank became the stage for a touching drama of separation, reunion, and growth. Two duck families, each at different stages of development, faced the challenge of climbing a weir—one led by independence, the other by youthful determination.
🐤 Xf5: Independence at 44 Days Old
The Xf5 family (5 ducklings, 44 days old) started the day napping under their favorite tree. When they woke, the ducklings were scattered—no longer tightly following their mother. Two of them wandered near the weir, but the mother didn’t call them back. It was a quiet sign of growing independence.
🎉 Ef5 Turns One Month Old
Ef5 (30 days old) reached its one-month milestone. One duckling struggled to swallow a mysterious object—possibly a fruit or large seed. Later, their mother was seen nibbling leaves, a rare behavior to witness despite its importance for survival.
🐦 Starlings and Ducklings
Nearby, starlings were bathing. One moment showed a duckling and a starling calmly sharing space—peaceful coexistence that hinted at familiarity between the species in this area.
🚧 Tf8’s Bold Weir Climb
Tf8 (48 days old) delivered a surprise: instead of climbing the rocks like usual, the ducklings swam straight through the water barrier! It was the first time the entire family used this method, even ignoring the mother’s usual path—a confident and creative solution to a familiar challenge.
💔 Kif3 Left Behind—Then Reunited
Kif3 (13 days old) appeared at the bottom of the weir, abandoned. The ducklings swam around alone, chirping, searching. After nearly an hour, their mother returned from upstream. The reunion was both emotional and extraordinary—and what followed was even more so.
🧗 Kif3’s First Weir Climb
After reuniting, the three ducklings climbed the weir with enthusiasm. Surprisingly, the mother followed last—uncommon in duck behavior. Their determination was on full display, showcasing how even very young ducklings can overcome challenges.
🐦 Other Encounters
A kingfisher pair was seen but not captured in action. A young azure-winged magpie, egrets in territorial tension, and charming moorhen preening added life to the landscape. White wagtails and sparrows also joined in with rare water-bathing scenes—bringing joyful variety to the observation.

🐤 Xf5（生後44日）：自立の兆し
木陰でお昼寝していたXf5ファミリー（ヒナ5羽）は、起きてからも散らばり気味。ヒナ2羽が堰近くまで行っても、母ガモは呼び戻しませんでした。子の成長を見守るような、静かな信頼が感じられました。
🎉 エf5（生後30日）：1ヶ月おめでとう
1ヶ月を迎えたエf5のヒナが、少し大きな塊を飲み込もうと苦戦していました。何かの実だったのかもしれません。母ガモが葉をちぎって食べる様子も観察でき、野草の摂食行動を記録できた貴重な瞬間でした。
🐦 子カモとムクドリの共演
水浴び中のムクドリ親子と、エf5の子カモが平和に同じ場所に。以前もGf7とムクドリの共演を見たことがあり、このエリアでは鳥たちが共存しているようです。
🚧 Tf8（生後48日）：泳いで堰を突破！
Tf8ファミリーは、母ガモのルートを無視し、岩を使わず水を泳いで堰を突破しました。全員がこの方法を使ったのは初めての記録で、ヒナたちの大胆さと創意工夫に驚かされました。
💔 キf3（生後13日）：置き去りと再会
堰下で母カモとはぐれたキf3のヒナ3羽が、長時間鳴きながら泳ぎ回っていました。寝たり起きたりを繰り返しながら母を待つ姿は切なくもたくましく、やがて母が戻ってくると、感動の再会となりました。
🧗 キf3の堰登り：母は最後に
再会後、ヒナたちは積極的に堰を登り始めました。実は過去に経験があるようで、登り方もスムーズ。母が最後に登るという珍しいパターンも印象的でした。
🐦 野鳥たちの水辺の風景
カワセミは姿を見せたものの撮影は叶わず。アオサギとコサギの接近、オナガの幼鳥、ムクドリやハクセキレイ、スズメの水浴びなど、さまざまな鳥たちの姿が心を和ませてくれました。
