A Mother's Unwavering Love: Ducklings Take Flight at Last!

Today’s field observation offered one of the most emotional moments of the season: watching a mother Eastern Spot-billed Duck refuse to abandon a struggling duckling, and finally witnessing her family take to the skies together.

Of2 Family (40 days old): The Long Climb
I began by checking for the Of2 family in the aftermath of last night's heavy rain. Usually found above the weir, they were now below it, forced to attempt the difficult climb. One of the two ducklings repeatedly failed to make it up the rushing water. The mother duck showed incredible patience—again and again, she circled back to encourage the stranded duckling to try once more.

It was a deeply moving sight. Even when the duckling was swept downstream, the mother waited. Eventually, they were reunited—a testament to her refusal to give up. Watching them tackle the rapids reminded me of past tragedies when ducklings were lost to predators in similar situations, underscoring the real dangers they face.

Interestingly, juvenile ducks (likely from the Af family) also flew up the weir during this time. It looked as if they were demonstrating to the younger ducklings how it was done—a subtle lesson from older siblings or cousins, adding another layer of social learning to the day’s drama.

Af Family (63 days old): A Triumph of Flight
Later, I found the Af family in the rearing area. The juveniles had grown so much they were nearly indistinguishable from the mother. Though I couldn’t confirm all 13 were present, I saw at least 11 together.

Then came the highlight: the Af mother and her juveniles took flight from the river, some awkwardly falling back at first before trying again. In one breathtaking moment, five remaining ducklings gathered their courage and launched into the air. It was one of the most powerful scenes I’ve ever documented—the very image of their transition from dependent ducklings to independent, flying ducks.

Mf1 Family (43 days old): The Hole in the Weir
Mf1's family had its own quirks. The mother was seen feeding inside a small hole in the weir—a behavior I'd never recorded before. The duckling was left behind momentarily as she flew off, its confused reaction both comical and a reminder of how even older ducklings still rely on their parents.

Ka f1 Family (11 days old): The Newcomers
These young ducklings were still figuring out their world. I found them a bit downstream, hesitating at footings and even doubling back uncertainly as they navigated new terrain.

Other Families Spotted
I also confirmed the safety of Tf8 (35 days old) and Lf4 (42 days old) families. Lf’s mother was especially vigilant, warning off other ducks even as her own ducklings were nearly grown. I also glimpsed If4 resting under the sluice gate, a spot they seem to have claimed.

Other Wildlife
Beyond ducks, the riverbank was lively. Swallow fledglings with still-yellow mouths waited for feedings. A heron hunted expertly, catching fish with swift precision. Kingfishers flashed past now and then, adding brilliant color to the scene.

Reflections
Today was unforgettable. Watching Of2’s mother wait for her duckling so persistently was a lesson in devotion, while the Af family’s first real flights symbolized the payoff of all that parental care. It was bittersweet not finding the Of7 family, but the day’s events were a moving reminder of the trials, triumphs, and constant change in the lives of these wild birds.

Tf8(35日目)、Lf4(42日目)の無事も確認。
