🌟 Overview
Today was all about training day for ducklings learning to descend the river's small weirs—like a natural waterslide that’s too steep for comfort.
Most of the day focused on one brave family, Ef5, whose tiny ducklings tried again and again to conquer the drop. Some were swept away, but they regrouped and finally succeeded!
Alongside this heroic struggle, other families showed off their own well-practiced “slides,” proving just how critical these skills are to survival.
While fewer families were found overall, those I did see offered some of the season’s most moving, tense, and rewarding moments to film.

Ef5 (5 Days Old): The Stars of the Day
Ef5’s ducklings had grown from four to five this week.
Today was their big first try on the weir—failing multiple times, getting swept back, but refusing to give up.
After four failed attempts, they finally nailed it on the fifth try!
They even conquered a second drop later, showing the day’s learning really stuck.
Sf9 (23 Days Old): Masterful Slide
Reunited after some days apart.
They put on a perfect “waterslide” performance, all ducklings zipping down in unison.
Gf7 (45 Days Old): Growing Bravery
Originally skittish about slides, today they slipped past Ef5 and descended confidently, a real sign of growing up.
Xf5 (19 Days Old): Energetic as Ever
Mother was ready for a nap, but the ducklings had other plans, resisting bedtime for ages.
Ff6 (41 Days Old): All Present
Calmly observed and confirmed safe.
Df捨4 (43 Days Old): Still Relaxed
One chick was seen resting in classic laid-back style.
Cf3 (48 Days Old): Growing Feathers
White flight feathers really coming in now—evidence of growing independence.
Tf8 (23 Days Old): Splashing Rebels
Spotted taking wild baths and retreating into the reeds.
Impressions of a Lost Duckling
Near Ff6 and Gf7, found a lone, calling duckling.
Might have been an Af-family chick.
It moved between adults and crossed the river before vanishing from sight.
Other Notes
-
Kingfisher seen eating a shrimp.
-
Another kingfisher perched and swaying.
-
Noisy crow disputes at a nest.
-
Fewer families overall today, with many old regulars missing.
💭 Final Thoughts
Watching tiny ducklings hurl themselves down rushing water was moving, even nerve-wracking.
Ef5’s determined practice, Sf9’s polished slide, and Gf7’s new confidence felt like pure wildlife storytelling—full of tension, setbacks, and triumph.
Even if fewer families turned up, those I did find offered some of the season’s best moments yet.
